For others, Oceano is the whole trip: park at the Oceano Campground, wake up to waves, and spend two days between the dunes and the surf. How to Get to Oceano from Pismo Beach
From downtown Pismo Beach, head south on Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) for approximately 3 miles. Turn right onto Pier Avenue in Oceano. Follow Pier Avenue to the end where you will find the Oceano Dunes entrance, the rental outfitters, and parking for the campground.
From Highway 101 southbound, take the Halcyon Road exit and head west, then turn south on Highway 1. From Highway 101 northbound, take the Oceano exit.

Sally's Tips for Oceano
- 1.Book ATV rentals online in advance for summer and holiday weekends. Walk-in availability disappears by mid-morning on busy days. Most outfitters on Pier Avenue have online booking.
- 2.If you are driving your own vehicle onto the beach, air down your tires to around 15 PSI before entering. The difference in soft sand traction is dramatic. Remember to reinflate before driving back on pavement.
- 3.Go on a weekday if at all possible. Summer Saturday at Oceano Dunes means long entry lines, packed camping areas, and a wait at most ATV rental shops. Tuesday through Thursday is a completely different experience.
- 4.Check tide charts before choosing a beach camping spot. The lower sections of the beach camping zone flood at high tide. Arrive with enough daylight to scout your location before setting up.
- 5.Bring your own water for beach camping. The primitive zones have portable toilets but no water. Developed Oceano Campground has water and showers, but the beach camping zone does not.
- 6.Spring afternoons at Oceano get very windy. A sandstorm at 3 PM in April is not uncommon. Morning visits are generally the calmest and most enjoyable.
- 7.Combine Oceano with a Pismo Beach dinner. Spend the afternoon at the dunes and drive 5 minutes north to eat at Ventana Grill for sunset ocean views, or Splash Cafe for clam chowder near the pier.
