Avila Beach sits in a sheltered cove and is consistently the warmest, calmest swimming water on the Central Coast. Oceano Beach, at the south end, is the only California coastal beach where you can still drive a vehicle onto the sand.

Pismo State Beach is the wide, sandy stretch of coastline that defines the Pismo Beach experience. The beach runs for several miles from downtown Pismo Beach south through Oceano, with a gradual slope into the Pacific and consistent surf that draws both beginners and experienced surfers. This is the beach you picture when you think of California beach culture.

Instead of a wide sandy shore, Shell Beach sits below ocean bluffs with kelp forests, tide pools, and coves accessible by stairs from the bluff-top neighborhoods. It is quieter, more scenic, and noticeably less crowded than downtown Pismo Beach.

Avila Beach
The Warmest Beach on the Central Coast
Avila Beach sits inside a protected cove about 5 miles north of downtown Pismo Beach, and it is consistently the warmest, sunniest beach destination on the California Central Coast. The hills surrounding three sides of the cove block the marine layer and cold northwest winds, resulting in noticeably warmer air and water temperatures than anywhere else in the area.

Drive ATVs on the Sand
Oceano Beach, at the south end of the Pismo Beach area, is unlike any other beach in California. A 1,500-acre portion of the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area allows street-legal and off-highway vehicles directly onto the sand — the only coastal beach in California where this is still permitted. The beach experience here is completely different from the rest of the Pismo area.

Sally's Tips for Pismo Beach Beaches
- 1.If you want calm, warm water for swimming or swimming with kids, go to Avila Beach, not Pismo State Beach. The cove makes a real difference in both water temperature and surf intensity.
- 2.Beach bonfires at Pismo State Beach are a genuine local tradition. Arrive early on summer evenings to claim a fire ring. Firewood is sold nearby. This is one of the few California beaches where fires are still allowed.
- 3.Shell Beach is the right call for tide pool exploring. Go at low tide, ideally a minus tide, and check the tide chart before you leave. The rocks below the bluffs have excellent sea life variety.
- 4.Oceano Dunes requires a vehicle to access the OHV zone but the non-vehicle walking beach at the north end of Oceano is underused and often nearly empty on days when Pismo State Beach is crowded.
- 5.The marine layer is a real factor on the Pismo coast. On mornings when Pismo Beach is foggy until noon, Avila Beach is often sunny by 9 AM. It's worth making the 10-minute drive north on those days.
- 6.Cooper (my rescue dog) has visited all four beaches, and dog rules change seasonally on Pismo State Beach. Check the current California State Parks regulations for seasonal restrictions before bringing your dog to the water.
- 7.For the best sunset, position yourself on the Pismo Beach Pier, at Dinosaur Caves Park above Shell Beach, or at any of the ocean-facing hotels above Shell Beach. All four offer unobstructed Pacific horizon sunsets.
