Beach Camping at Its Best

Pismo State Beach Campground is one of the best beach camping destinations in California, and I do not say that lightly. The campground puts you within walking distance of the Pacific, the Pismo Beach Pier, and the towns restaurants and shops. You get the genuine beach experience without sacrificing access to everything that makes Pismo Beach worth visiting.

The campground is actually two separate facilities: North Beach Campground and Oceano Campground. They serve slightly different campers. Understanding the difference before you book will save you from getting the wrong experience.

North Beach Campground

North Beach Campground is the one that looks exactly like what you picture when you imagine camping on a California beach. Sites are clustered near the dunes north of the Pismo Beach Pier, with the ocean close enough that you can hear it from your sleeping bag. The campground has tent and RV sites, fire rings, flush toilets, and cold showers. No hookups at most sites.

This is where I send tent campers and anyone who wants that raw, sand-in-your-shoes experience. The trade-off is minimal amenities. Showers are cold. The sites are close together in peak season. But you walk directly onto the beach from your site, and the sunsets from here are some of the best on the Central Coast.

North Beach Campground fills up extraordinarily fast for summer. I have seen summer weekends sell out within minutes of opening on ReserveCalifornia.com. If you want July or August, you need to be logged in and ready to book at the exact moment the 6-month window opens.

Oceano Campground

Oceano Campground is the better choice for RV travelers, families wanting more comfort, and anyone planning a longer stay. Located about 2 miles south of downtown Pismo Beach near the town of Oceano, it is larger and better equipped than North Beach. Full hookup sites are available with water, electric, and sewer connections. Hot showers and flush toilets throughout.

Oceano Campground is also the gateway to Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, which allows vehicles and ATVs directly on the sand. If you are planning a dunes riding trip, this is your base camp. Several ATV rental outfitters operate near the beach entrance, and the dune access road is a short distance from the campground.

The beach at Oceano Campground is a short walk through a sandy path. It is not quite as immediate as North Beach, but still very close. The extra amenities make this the right choice for most families with young children.

How to Book a Campsite

All reservations for Pismo State Beach campgrounds are made through ReserveCalifornia.com. The booking window opens 6 months before your target dates. For summer weekends, this is not a casual process. Sites for the Fourth of July weekend open in early January and are often gone within minutes of the window opening.

My advice: create a ReserveCalifornia account before you need it, have your credit card saved, and set a calendar alarm for 7:00 AM on the exact day that 6 months out lands. The site uses a real-time booking system, and popular sites disappear in seconds on summer dates.

For shoulder season (May, June, September, October), the booking pressure drops significantly. You can often find sites with a week or two of lead time. For weekdays even in summer, availability is considerably better than weekends.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Pismo Beach weather is different from inland California, even in summer. Morning fog is common from June through early August, a phenomenon locals call June Gloom (which extends into July). The fog usually burns off by late morning, but temperatures at the campground can be 15 to 20 degrees cooler than inland areas. Bring layers even if the forecast looks warm.

Wind picks up most afternoons along the coast, particularly at North Beach. A quality tent with good stake-down is essential. If you are camping in a tent at North Beach, practice setting it up before you arrive. Sand does not hold stakes as well as soil.

Firewood is not available for free at the campground. You can purchase it from vendors near the entrance or at local markets in Pismo Beach. Collecting wood from the beach or dunes is not allowed. Campfires are permitted in designated fire rings at your site.

Sally's Tips for Pismo State Beach Campground

  • Book at exactly 7:00 AM on the day your 6-month window opens. Summer sites go within minutes.
  • North Beach sites closest to the water are worth requesting specifically, not just any available site.
  • Bring a sand anchor or heavy weights for your canopy and tent. The afternoon wind is real.
  • Oceano Campground is the better base if you plan to ATV at the dunes. North Beach is better for a beach-focused stay.
  • Morning fog is normal June through August. Do not let a cloudy 8 AM discourage you. It almost always clears.
  • The Pier is a short bike ride or walk from North Beach Campground. Bring bikes if you have them.
  • Keep all food locked up or in your car. Raccoons are active at night in both campgrounds.
  • Reservations can be modified, not just cancelled, on ReserveCalifornia.com. If you cannot get your first choice dates, book what you can and modify when better sites open up.
