Dolphin Bay Resort sits in the same Shell Beach neighborhood as The Cliffs Resort, about 3 miles south of downtown Pismo Beach on a bluff above the Pacific. What makes Dolphin Bay distinct is the all-suite format. Every room is a proper suite, and most come with a fully equipped kitchen, meaning this is one of the very few luxury properties on the Central Coast where you can actually cook during your stay. For families, extended visits, or anyone who prefers not to eat every meal at a restaurant, that changes the math considerably.

The resort has a contemporary feel that stands apart from The Cliffs Resort, which has a more classic California resort aesthetic. Dolphin Bay is modern, clean-lined, and polished. The staff are consistently praised in guest reviews, and the attention to service is one of the property's genuine strengths. When people describe Dolphin Bay as one of the most well-reviewed hotels in the Pismo Beach area, the staff quality is a big part of why.

The Suite Layout and Kitchen

The kitchen suites are the defining feature of Dolphin Bay. Full-size refrigerators, stovetops, dishwashers, and cookware mean you can pick up groceries from the Vons or Trader Joe's in nearby Grover Beach and treat the suite like a home base rather than just a hotel room. For a 3 or 4 night stay, this is genuinely useful. Families with young children especially appreciate being able to prepare simple meals and breakfast without coordinating a restaurant every morning.

The suites are spacious compared to standard hotel rooms. Living areas are separate from sleeping areas in larger suite configurations. If you have been priced out of multi-room hotel setups at similar properties, Dolphin Bay often offers a cost-effective middle ground where a single suite gives you the square footage of two standard rooms. The ocean-facing suites have balconies or patios with views of the Shell Beach coastline, and the quality of light in the morning on a clear Central Coast day is genuinely worth waking up for.

The Spa

Along with The Cliffs Resort, Dolphin Bay is one of only two hotels near Pismo Beach with a real full-service spa. If a spa day is part of your trip, your options are essentially these two properties. The Dolphin Bay spa offers massages, body treatments, and facials. The experience leans more boutique than resort grand, but the quality of treatments is consistently well-reviewed. Book in advance for weekend visits, particularly in summer, when treatments fill up quickly.

A comparison between the two spas is difficult because the experiences are genuinely different. The Cliffs spa is more established and has a larger footprint. Dolphin Bay's spa feels more intimate. Which one you prefer is partly a matter of personal taste. What is consistent is that both are in a different category from any other hotel in the Pismo Beach area.

The Pool and Ocean Views

The heated outdoor pool and hot tub sit on the Shell Beach bluff with ocean views. The bluff setting in Shell Beach offers a different coastal experience than the wide sandy beaches of Pismo Beach proper. The rocky coastline and elevated vantage point create long views up and down the Central Coast that you simply do not get from hotels at beach level. Sunset from the pool area is excellent.

If you want direct beach access and the ability to walk out onto the sand, the Shell Beach hotels are not the right choice. The nearest sandy beach access from Dolphin Bay requires a short drive or a walk down the bluff stairs. If the view and the bluff experience are what you are after, this is ideal. If you want to wake up and walk straight onto the sand with children in tow, SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel or Sandcastle Hotel on the Beach in downtown Pismo are better matches.

Dolphin Bay vs. The Cliffs Resort

The honest comparison: The Cliffs Resort has a more iconic setting, a more established dining room in The Lido, and a slightly more dramatic bluff position. Dolphin Bay wins on space, the full kitchen suites, and a contemporary design that some guests prefer over The Cliffs' more traditional aesthetic. Both have spas and heated pools at roughly similar price points.

My recommendation: choose The Cliffs if a special occasion dinner is central to your stay and you want the most polished resort experience. Choose Dolphin Bay if you are staying 3 or more nights, traveling with family, or want more living space and a kitchen. Both are excellent choices, and the Shell Beach location they share is genuinely peaceful compared to the downtown Pismo Beach hotel strip.

Sally's Tips for Staying at Dolphin Bay Resort

• ●Book a kitchen suite if it is available in your budget. The full kitchen changes the stay from a hotel to a temporary home base.
• ●Pick up groceries at Trader Joe's or Vons in Grover Beach (about 5 minutes south) when you arrive to stock the kitchen.

• ●Book spa treatments when you book the room, not when you arrive. Weekend slots fill weeks in advance.
• ●Drive into downtown Pismo Beach for casual meals and the pier. The 5 to 7 minute drive is easy and gives you access to the best restaurants.
• ●The Shell Beach bluff setting is quieter and more private than hotels near the pier. If you want the energy of downtown Pismo, choose a hotel on Price Street instead.
• ●Check for packages that combine suites with spa treatments. The resort runs seasonal offers that bundle both.
